weekly roundup 07/06/26: Hill & Dale – Millstone, CS Lewis 5 Miler, Ulster Age Group T&F Championships

Once again club members have excelled across all disciplines at track and field as well as in trail and road races. First up this week was the 6th of this season’s Hill & Dale races, Millstone. Starting and finishing in Donard Park the runners followed trails through Donard Forest before a steep climb beyond the treeline onto the exposed climb to Millstone Mountain, one of Slieve Donard’s foothills. Always one of the toughest of all the Hill & Dale races, the brutal winds tested runners to their limits. At almost 8k after approximately 580m of ascent, Luke Hamilton was the first of the club’s finishers to return to the park in a shade over the hour, 1:00:23. He was closely followed by Abby Andrews 1:00:33. Clair Quigley 1:03:20 led Fiona McQuillan 1:09:36, Claire Scott 1:09:59 and June McMinn 1:11:42. John Adgey once again claimed the 1st M80 spot in 1:15:03. John McGarvey continued his excellent first season of hill and daling in 1:21:38 with Kim McCourt 1:25:08 and Sophie Hamilton 1:33:54 rounding off the NDAC finishers.

There was a huge turnout of more than 45 North Down AC runners on Friday night for one of the most popular 5 mile races on the calendar – the CS Lewis 5 miler following a route between CS Lewis Square and Victoria Park.

Dale Murray was the club’s first finisher in 7th place in 27:30. Aaron Beggs was 9th in 28:11, adding 1st M40 to his recent collection of well deserved accolades. Ben Macrory ran a 6 minute PB to finish in 30:09. Sarah Connolly was the first North Down female in 33:59 and there were further age group prizes for Sarah Benton F55 – 34:21, Valerie Blaney F70 – 45:02, David Massey M50 – 31:09 and Pat O’Driscoll M75 – 56:09.

In Saturday’s Irish Milers Meet in Dublin, Craig McMeechan ran his first track 5000m of the season to clock 14mins38.09s in the men’s A race.

It was fabulous to see so many from the club taking part in the NI & Ulster Age Group Championships at the MPT over the weekend, with 4 medals gained and a few PBs in top provincial competition in less-than-ideal conditions. On day 1, Carter Rolston took silver in the U16 boys 3000m in a PB of 9:37.99 , while in the U16 girls 3000m Caitlyn Dickenson was 5th in 11:38.19. In the 800m Catherine McBrinn took silver in the U15 girls 800m in 2:22.58 with Sophie Rankin 6th (2:28.17) and Eve Sloan 10th in 2:36.41. In the U16 girls 800m, Coco Smith was 13th in 2:35.37, a PB, while in the U17 girls 800m Maia Johnston ran a PB to finish 5th in 2:33.04. In the U16 boys 800m, Seb Mair took bronze in 2.09.54, while in the U15boys 800m Isaac Hall was just outside his PB in 2:21.78. Rose Reavy was 4th in her heats of both the U14 200m and 800m. Molly Rankin was 5th in her heat of the 800m with a PB and 6th in her heat of the 200m.

On day 2, Sophie Rankin came home with a bronze in the U16 girls 1500m in 4:56.38pb, with Catherine McBrinn 5th with another pB in 5:01.22 and Eve Sloan 15th in 5:33.50. In the U16 girls 1500m, Caitlyn Dickenson was 5th in 5:18.70. In the U16 boys 1500m, Seb Mair went one place better than his 800m to secure silver in 4:30.64. In the combine U18/19/20 boys/men’s 1500m, Ollie Playfair was 5th in 4:22.00, with Malte Kunze 7th in 4:27.45. In the sprints, Freya Lowry clocked 33.52 in the U17 girls 200m and Isla Wiltshire 66.18s in the 400m.

On Saturday, Megan Walker won the U14 75mH & Faith Johnston finished 3rd. Travis Truesdale took silver in the U16 100m & 4th in the 200m. Charlie Moore produced a perfect dip finish to take bronze in the U14 80m. And to finish, Devon, Jean, Eva & Jessica took bronze in the U16 Girls 4×100 and Charlotte Allen, Travis Truesdale, Katie Johnston & Tomas Montgomery also took bronze in the U18 mixed 4×100

On Sunday, Poppy Earl was an emphatic winner of the U15 80mH & 250mH. Cameron McCracken & Josh Liggett finished 1st & 2nd in the U19 110mH and Cameron also won the 100m. Katie Johnston won the U17 200m & was 3rd in the 100m and Eva Dickson finished 3rd in the U15 200m
