Irish National Novice and Uneven Ages

In perfect weather conditions and firm underfoot ground our athletes enjoyed some fast paced racing throughout the day at the Dundalk IT.

Jessica Craig and Rachel Gibson made the ladies novice race their own with a 2nd and 3rd place finish with some excellent running. Jessica tracked the winner, 1500m specialist Fiona Kehoe, for most of the trip but was always fighting hard to catch her rival.

It was nevertheless a convincing 2nd place for Jessica and clubmate Rachel had a remarkable run in from around 300m out to negate the 25m lead the 3rd placed runner had to take the final podium place.

Our other podium finisher of the day was Craig McMeechan in the boys U19 event. Having won the Ulster version at Finn Valley recently Craig made his presence felt at the front of the pack. After the first lap the winner, Paul O’Donnell took himself off and created a gap which was insurmountable by the rest, so it was left to Craig and Sean O’Leary to battle it out for 2nd. Craig unfortunately lost out on the sprint finish to record 3rd place. Great work with still another year to go in the age band.

We had three runners in the U17 girls race with Jessica Scott 36th, Nia McNally 64th and Anna Scott 100th flying the colours for North Down. Thomas Patterson was a strong finisher in the U17 boys when finishing 49th and Tara McDonough struggled with a stitch late on to finish in 59th in the U13 girls race. Megan Briggs and Rachel Gillespie were competing in the U15 girls and placed themselves 44th and 109th.
