Jamie Coulter-Smyth, Boulder Bay Classic, NZ 29/10/23

North Down AC’s member with the best excuse for avoiding club training sessions, Jamie Coulter-Smyth who is based in Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island ran a fast parkrun on Saturday and found out afterwards that a local trail race, the Boulder Bay Classic 10.5k was taking place on Sunday 29th October. Despite some misgivings about doing a tough, hilly trail race the day after parkrun he turned up to the race start at Taylor’s Mistake – apparently named for one of two 19th Century Captain Taylors whose navigational errors resulted in their vessels grounding on the beach. Jamie’s navigational skills were never in question as he left the beach and followed the ascents to Godley Head among the leading group of 5 runners before pulling away from the pack. Despite a fall he maintained his lead to win the race in 37:18. His trophy was the right shoe of the original race winner in 1981 encased in resin, with the first place women’s winner receiving the left shoe!
