Katie and Ben Qualify at Santry

Katie Hewitt and Ben Reynolds (both Sullivan Upper) qualified for the Intermediate Girls and Intermediate Boys Irish teams in the Schools Multi Event International, to be held indoors at the Kelvin Hall on 9th December. The Irish Championships were held at Santry in non-stop torrential rain which caused an hour delay in the start and resulted in the girls high jump being switched to the indoor area. Ben had a bronze medal in the 6 event Irish Scools Championship but the boys drop high jump (a strong event for Ben) in the selectiion process for the International where boys HJ is dropped for space limitation so Ben and Katie were 4th for selection purposes.

Katie"s results were long jump 5.04m; hurdles 12.9 secs; shot 7.53m; high jump 1.38m and a pb in the 800m of 2:34.0 for a score of 2757 points and 4th for qualification. Ben"s marks were shot 10.65m; hurdles 14.9 secs; 200m 25.1 secs; long jump 5.60m; high jump 1.79m and a pb in the 800m of 2:19.0. Ben without his conditioning work behind him had an interesting 800m when he slipped on the wet surface at the start and the gun went off with him on the ground. He got up, ran a 66 sec first lap and a pb of 2:19, probably a Reynolds family record. As stated, he was 3rd in the Irish Championship (retained by Jason Harvey of Campbell) and 4th in the qualifying process. His shot was also a pb.
