The first round of the 2012 Northern Ireland Young Athletes League took place on Saturday at Antrim Forum. Only two rounds will be held this Olympic year as in common with most athletic events, the final of the league will be held early to clear the decks for the Olympics. Inter-school matches, Duke of Edinburgh Awards and above all a Rugby match in Dublin all contributed to North Down having a very small team. Not that they were the only club in that situation.
Jacob Cavanagh, Charlie McNutt and Conor Scollan were the only U13 boys and there were no U13 girls in the club squad. Charlie was in great form and showed his versatility by winning 1500m and high jump. The U15’s had only one athlete but that athlete was Oliver Wakefield. Oliver was the outstanding U13 athlete in the Province in 2011 and he shows every sign of repeating that form in the U15’s. Oliver had a clean sweep in his three events in style, 100m, 80m hurdles and long jump with personal bests in each. In the U15 girls, Natasha Mellon, Claire Francis and Sophie Cree all covered as many events as allowed with useful performance with Sophie’s win in the javelin the best. Similarly in the U17 boys where Jonny Baxter, Ciaron Farren and Andrew Kennedy covered their events well. Jonny had a big pb to win the long jump. Alex Catherwood showed the flag for the U17 girls, winning the high jump and scoring well at long jump and shot.
