Records Tumble, Speers still Rule

[Not a valid template]A record field of 47 runners took part in the big event of the running year but could not part the Ken and Lynne Hawtin Shield for the Christmas Handicap from the Speers family. Harry Speers equalled the win of sister Jemma in the corresponding fixture last year. The new CEO of Ulster Rugby Shane Logan was 41 seconds behind and then came the avalanche of close finishers, headed by Conor O”Boyle who claimed third. The first lady was Jessica Craig with Lauren Scott and Roberta Dornan next. Course records tumbled as new times were posted by Cambridge University Captain Robin Brown, fastest overall in 16:50 min net, by Lauren Scott who broke the womens record with 21:01 min and by Glen Willis with a new U15 time of 19:10 min.  Harry was also inside the former U15 best. and the five fastest girls all beat the previous womens record.  A new female masters record of 21:29 min went to Stephanie Hambling.

Less than 5 minutes covered the period between first and last, less than 3 minutes covered 3rd to 47th so the finishing judges earned their fee and thanks go out to all involved in the organisation. This was the fifth year that the Hawtin Trophy was awarded for the Christmas Handicap though the Handicap has been going for several years. The trophy commemorates Ken”s legendary Boxing Day Run which was held continuously for forty years. Uniquely in the calendar there is a window for all athletes with students home for Christmas and power athletes available after coming off their endurance phase. What the users of the park make of running Santas, fairies, elves and weirdos is anyone”s guess.
