While Storm Bert’s rain, wind, ice and snow ensured that little survived the weekend’s local race calendar as cancellations and postponements arrived faster than Nick Griggs’ at parkrun, one North Down AC runner made the sensible decision to head to Villefranche-sur-Saône north of Lyon to take part in the Beaujolais half marathon. The biggest running festival in France takes place annually on the weekend after the third Thursday in November when the region’s new wine is released on Beaujolais Day. Many runners don fancy dress and few chase PBs as they tackle the hilly course through vineyards, wine cellars and historical towns. The route’s 9 aid stations provided ample refreshment to runners as they appreciate the hydrating effects of the light, fruity red.
Jamie Andrews and a group of friends thoroughly enjoyed the race and his finish time was irrelevant, although he can vouch for the quality of this year’s Beaujolais!
