Brendan McConville scored a lifetime best of 7283 points in leading the Norwich Union GB & NI Mens team to 6th place in the First League at the European Cup of Combined Events in Hengelo, Netherlands, on Sunday 4 July.
The GB & NI Mens team were lying in 7th place before the 1500m but a magnificent set of 1500m runs by the team made a great escape from relegation. They beat Slovenia by 94 seconds ? the equivalent of 599 points ? to climb out of the relegation places and finish sixth after two dramatic days (2nd string team member Anthony Sawyer recorded 4 no jumps in the long jump).
Brendan opened with his best-ever first day score, 3760 points, by clocking 11.34 in the 100m (wind: +2.2), long jumping 6.77m (wind: +1.5), putting the shot 12.10m, high jumping 2.00m and running the 400m in 50.33. On the second day, he sprinted his 110m hurdles (wind: +1.8) in 15.21 seconds, threw the discus 36.10m (a PB by 1cm), pole vaulted 4.60m, threw the javelin 46.63m and ran the 1500m in 4:25.06.
