The Northern Ireland Final of the McCain UK Young Athles League was held on Saturday at Antrim under changeable and often wet conditions. North Down sent a seemingly big team to the final but, with a huge number of events to cover, not big enough. City of Derry were again winners with North Down a disappointing 5th. The main problem was the very low turnout from the club in the U13 boys and U17 girls categories. The day was highly enjoyable and there were some quality performances, not least by the javelin throweres and the sprinters. The highlight was the retention of the Athlete of the Match award in the prestigious U17 youths category by Matthew Martin. The javelin thrower became the first athlete in the history of the finals to win the top award twice.
