Tom Reynolds and Lauren Scott were the North Down AC Athletes of 2010 with Matthew Martin retaining the Top Young Thrower Award and Tom Reynolds also winning the the Top Jumper award. Friday night saw the annual end of the track season awards night at Bangor Sportsplex.. The 2010 trophies were on display and Standards Awards were awarded. In the absence of Club Championships this year the age related awards were based on a coaches” poll. Tom has had an oustanding season which clmaxed with selection in the decathlon for the upcoming Commonwealth Gams in Delhi. He has improved his decathlon pb by nearly 300 points, collected a AAA medal and has become the first North Down athlete to go over 7 metres in the long jump. Lauren has ruled over the middle distances this season with huge pbs at 800m, 1500m and 3000m having the best club times for over 30 years and the best ever by a Senior Woman. Matthew took his U17 club javelin record to 59.64m with the 700g implement and threw 50.45m with the 800g one and had call-ups to the Schools and Celtic Internationals and the UK School Games, collecting numerous titles.
Winning age category awards were, U13 Boys Michael Gaffney, 13 Girls Elleana Hamilford-Hull, U15 Boys Niall McGrattan, U15 Girls Abbey Taylor, U17 Boys Matthew Martin, U17 Girls Beth Wilson, U20 Men Mark Patterson, U20 Women Kathy Hetherington. McCain Young Athletes” League “Athlete of the Match” Tee Shirts were given to one boy and one girl for each of the qualifying rounds and Weglarz Trophies covering club support and improvement went to Sophie Cree, Niamh Cummings, Andrew Kennedy, Darragh McDonald and the senior one to Kenny Elliott.
Once again we have several club stalwarts heading off to Uni and best wishes go with them. Most track athletes are now on their break until October while middle distance ones are already on winter training usuallyin the Castle or Ward Parks on Tuesdays and Thursdays as long as the light holds.
