Katie Hewitt and Hannah Lewis took the first two places in the U15 girls pentathlon at the first day of the Rover Northern Ireland Multi Events Championships at Antrim Stadium. Scott McCauley led the youths U17 octathlon at the half way stage with four personal bests.
It has been a long time since North Down were unrepresented in the Decathlon Championsips but Brendan McConville was working and competing in a Dutch invitation event in two weeks. Peter Glass, Philip Browne and Luke Reynolds were all on Northern Ireland duty in Grangemouth and Derby and Paul Curran was held up on return from holiday. It was unfortunate because Edward Dunfield of Birchfield whose career has long paralleled that of Tom Reynolds made the trip over from Birmingham. Edward had the satisfaction of long jumping over seven metres for the first time and led at the half way point with 3692 points.
Alan McCullough of Willowfield retained his Northern Ireland 10,000 metres title with a powerful display at Antrim, finishing a lap clear in 32.06.14. Deane Fisher was second and Eamon Christie of Beechmount was third after a strong finish and Karl Dynes was first veteran.
Leading lady Mary Margaret Meade was third on the track setting a new championship best and Northern Ireland all comers record of 34.38.40.
