Matthew Martin throws CYG standard in Bedford

On Saturday for the first time this year,  Matthew Martin passed the NI qualification standard (58.00m) in javelin for selection consideration to the  team in the Commonwealth Youth Games, due to be held in the Isle of Man in September. Matthew threw past the required distance with 59.63m in Glasgow last year at the Schools International but needed to repeat it in the current season. His main problem has been finding suitable competition as now competes at U20 level with the 800g javelin but the GYG event will be with the 700g implement. A competition in Bedford aimed at throwers in the same situation is being held alongside the UK combined events and in the javelin, Matthew was 2nd with 58.95m.. Also in Bedford, Peter Glass and Tom Reynolds are competing in the AAA decathlon championships.
