The Northern Ireland and Ulster U14-U17 Championships took place over the weekend at Antrim Forum with U14 and U15 on Saturday and U16 and U17 on Sunday.. The entries from North Down juniors was numerically very poor but some compensation came from a high strike rate in terms of medals per athlete. On Saturday Rebekha Rutherford won the U14 high jump with 1.50m and Andrew Kennedy won U15 shot (3.25 Kg) with 10.96m. Andrew also was 3rd at 100m in 13.19 sec (heat time 12.83) and 6th at discus (1 Kg 28.10m) with an event clash at 100m and discus). Out of huge fields in U14 long jump and 80m, Olivia Cumming was 7th in both with 3.98m and 11.53 sec. Her win in the 80m heats had an unrecorded time.
There were a few more there on Sunday when Beth Wilson had a double in U17 shot and discus with 11.05m (3.25 Kg) and 34.38m). Defending Champion Glen Willis won the U17 1500m in 4:18.59 min. Matthew Stockton won javelin (700g) with 48.48m and was 4th at discus (1.5 Kg) with 28.83m. His sister Emma Stockton and training partner Niall McGrattan were both 2nd at U16 javelin (both 600g), Emma with 16.78m and Niall with 43.17m. Alex Catherwood was 2nd at U16 high jump with a good 1.55m and Andrew Mellon was 3rd at U17 400m in 51.63 sec. James Docherty was 5th at U16 200m and 6th at 100m in 24.83 sec (heat 24.30 sec) and 12.23 sec (heat 12.20).
Competing under the Regent House banner, Clare Robinson won the U17 100m hurdles in 16.16 sec and had too seconds in long jump and triple jump with 4.85m and 10.23m.
