Irish Indoors & Ulster Age Groups – Day 1

[Not a valid template]Oliver Wakefield in the NI & Ulster Age Group Championships and Alan Kennedy in the Irish Senior Indoor Championships were the stand-out performers for North Down on Day 1 of the Irish Indoors at the Odyssey Arena on Saturday. Oliver won the first event of the morning, the U14 long jump, with 4.91m to collect the first medal awarded by Sports Minister Carál NíChuilín. Oliver followed with two blistering races at 60m hurdles winning the semi in 9.61 sec and the final in 9.36 sec – 10th in the UK U15 rankings and the best this year by a 13 year old. Alan closed the first day by winning the last event, the Senior Mens triple jump. He opened with an indoor pb of 14.98m which proved to be the winning jump.

Niall Robinson led the opening few laps in his heat of the mens 1500m, ultimately finishing 3rd in 3:56.46 min which was enough to qualify for the final on Sunday. Jordan Stokes didn’t race race the 3000m due to illness (but mistakenly shown in results as running 9:28.7: should be Ben Brannagh , St Mals?).

Other club athletes to feature in the age group events were Claire Francis who was 10th in the U15 girls 800m in 2:40.21 min and Olivia Cumming who ran 8.90 sec in the U15 girls 60m and long jumped 3.86m. Congratulations to Claire Francis on breaking Katie Hewitt’s 9 year old club under 15 girls 800m record.
