Shots explode at Schools Multis

[Not a valid template]It certainly wasn’t the weather but many seemed to have tired legs on Wednesday when the Ulster Schools Multi Events Championships were held at Bangor Sportsplex. Certainly the jumps were highly forgetable. Then came the shot – and the ranking lists had to be revisited with a vengeance. Richard Lockhart added well over a metre to his pb with 13.07m. David Robb with no history in the event putted 12.50m And Peter Glass had a massive 14.20m to finally remove Mark Pielou’s U17 club record after 2 or 3 decades.

[Not a valid template]The Multi Events Championships are held at this time of year basically because the Schools International is an indoor event at the Kelvin Hall on 11th December and the team is picked from the Irish Schools Championships at Santry on 25th September. There used to be an event in the summer term but the duplication has been discontinued. Age groups from the previous school year are used though athletes have moved on or even left.

Katie Hewitt won the Schools Junior event to add to her NIAF title, her pbs at hurdles and 800m unfortunately invalid with the lack of a gun. She jumped well but was well behind Linzi Herron in long and high jump though she was well ahead in hurdles. Katie had a 180 points deficit going into the final 800m but converted that to a 50 point surplus. She finished with 2514 points from 12.1/7.07/4.61/1.40/2-42.6.

Peter Glass won the Intermediate boys event with 4291 points, probably a schools record with hurdles 13.8, HJ 1.76, shot 14.20, 200m 23.3, LJ 6.07 and 800m 2-34.7. Sophie Reynolds was 3rd Intermediate girl with 2251, Luke Reynolds and David Robb were 2nd and 3rd in the Senior boys with 3560 and 3369 and Grant Montgomery also reached the Irish final with 4th in the Junior boys. Ben Reynolds and Tessa Nicholas were also in the mix.
