Oliver brings down the final curtain at Kelvin Hall

[Not a valid template]On Sunday Oliver Wakefield won gold at long jump and silver at 60m with two big pbs when the Scottish U14 and U16 Championships took place on the last day of athletics at Kelvin Hall. It was the final curtain for the historic Glasgow arena which has hosted Scottish athletic events for decades. When the new Commonwealth Games Arena and Velodrome opens next October, it will host Scottish indoor events throughout the winter. 

Oliver, with a 4.99m long jump pb bugging him was pleased to break 5m at last and won the the event with his best jump of 5.17m in the first round. Declining to run in the 60m hurdles because of a timetable clash with the jump, he ran in the 60m and was 2nd in 7.83 secs He won his heat and semi, both in 7.97 sec before finishing 2nd in the final to Michael Olsen of Edinburgh who ran a big pb of 7.65. His 60m time however is a new club U15 indoor record.

Alex Catherwood was  too young by a day to compete at U16 level and competed in the U18 Championship on Saturday when she equalled her high jump pb at 1.60m. She narrowly failed at 1.65m which would have put her in the medals countback mix, but the bar fell although she did not appear to touch it.
