Congratulations to June McMinn who completed this year’s Lanzarote ironman and succeeded in claiming a 2nd place finish in her age category.
Most of us would rightly feel a sense of achievement in running a marathon, what with all the training and tapering, recovery and hobbling down stairs. But to do this after a 2.4 mile(3.8K for the KM aficionados) swim, 112 mile(180K) cycle takes endurance competition to another level.
Of 1315 starters in the race 895 finished. So a 32% dropout signifies how difficult the conditions were. Hot weather and strong winds made it extremely hard to cycle and ultimately stay protected from the intense sun. Ironically June suggests it was the cold wet windy night’s training on Bangor pier that prepared her so well for this magnificent effort.
June is now justifiably having a recovery period and enjoying the more relaxed nature of Lanzarote.
