The weather held up well at a superbly organised Ulster Schools Championships apart from strong headwinds during major finals in the afternoon. Highlights from club athletes included double golds for Amy Foster, Hannah Lewis and David Keys plus gold and silver for Caroline Oakes, Richard Lockhart, Ben Worthington, Katie Hewitt and Erin Mullan. Other golds went to Peter Glass, Kiki Malomo-Paris, Shaun Tinman, Stacey Mullan to add to the Friday night ones of Jordan Neil and Ben Reynolds. Seven of the major girl sprinters brought back gold or silver and there were seventeen golds in total.
For the Seniors Caroline won javelin and was 2nd in discus, Erin won 400m hurdles with 2nd at 100m hurdles which was won by Stacey, Richard won hammer with 2nd at shot, Ben won shot and was 3rd at discus, Peter Glass won 110m hurdles in a huge 14.9 and was 3rd in the vault (with Peter Abernethy 2nd) while Danielle Oliver was 2nd at high jump and 4th at javelin. Luke Reynolds was 2nd to Peter in the sprint hurdles and Jason Blanc had 3rds in both long and triple jumps as well as anchoring the winning Grammar School relay. Jamie Stewart was 4th at steeplechase as was Kerry Iveston at 800m.
At Intermediate level, Amy dominated 100m and 200m in 12.5 (12.3 in qualifying) and 25.3 despite the headwinds. David made it a double by adding discus gold to his overnight one in hammer. Katie won the sprint hurdles and was 2nd at long jump while Kim Shaw overcame her miserable run of illness and injury to take 2nd at 300m where Alison Lavery was 4th. Scott McCauley had 2nds at both long and triple jumps and Nathan Barnett also had 2nd at 400m. Jordan of course was a winner on Friday and Sophie had a 3rd and was about to get a relay gold. Nicola Simpson was 3rd at 800m just ahead of Lauren Scott and other 3rds went to Ben McConnell at javelin and Grant Montgomery at 400m hurdles. Mark McClean had a 4th in long jump and there were 6ths for Jessica Craig at 1500m and Curtis Mullan at 400m hurdles.
With the Juniors, Hannah easily won 200m and long jump. Kiki just overhauled Tasha Paxton in the 100m, both running 13.5 after earlier winning separate semis in 13.1. Kathryn Colwell was 2nd to Hannah in the 200m. Shaun Tinman won the sprint hurdles and had a triple jump 3rd while Ben Reynolds had an overnight pole vault win. Karl Brown fell in the hurdles and was 6th. For the minors, Steven Colwell was 7th at long jump and Kerrie Craig 8th at high jump
