Our good friends at Scrabo Striders organised a series of trail races in the beautiful surroundings of Mount Stewart on the evening of Saturday 5th August. These comprised a 2k, 5k, 10k and half marathon with North Down AC athletes competing in each event, Carter Rolston came 2nd in the 2k race in a superb time of 6:55. Sophie Hamilton ran in the 5k, her second race in 3 days and she even collected a PB! In the 10k David Massey was the first NDAC finisher in 5th place in 40:33. Aaron McAuley was 6th in 41:01 narrowly ahead of the first female finisher, Fiona McQuillan (8th) in 41:04. Clair Quigley took second spot on the womens’ podium finishing in 44:20. Tim Cooke 44:58, Hollie Massey 47:05, Luke Hamilton 47:06 and Sarah Gibson 47:34 were next to finish in club colours ahead of Steven Boyd 48:45, Wendy Neely 52:16 and Glenn Frazer 1:02:30. Another runner, Michael O’Donoghue of Orangegrove AC, who is well known to many NDAC members, ran the trail marathon from Waterfoot to Ballycastle with Donald Smith and Tracy McKittrick in the morning before driving straight to Mount Stewart to compete for his club in the 10k! He finished his marathon shortly after Donald but couldn’t persuade the North Down man to join him in another 10k! There were 2 NDAC runners in the Half Marathon, tackling the 10k loop twice with an extra hill added afterwards to make up the HM distance, John Ferguson 1:51:21 and Paula Simpson 1:52:30 who claimed 3rd female finisher.
