It was back to cold, windy weather at Tullamore on Saturday for the Irish Schools Championships. Despite still hurting from a painful hip injury, Andrew Mellon (BGS) won the Intermediate Boys 400m in 50.27 secs. Silver medals went to Matthew Stockton (BGS), Beth Wilson (Sullivan) and Alex Catherwood (Ashfield). Mathew was 2nd in Senior Boys javelin with 47.49m and Beth in the Senior Girls discus with 39.19m, just short of her recent District Schools pb and putting her 4th in the UK. Alex was 2nd in the Intermediate Girls high jump which had a 9.00am start and saw 9 girls jump 1.55m but only 1 beyond. On countback at the Alex was 2nd and Sarah Connolly (Glenlola) 8th. Michael Gaffney(Campbell) had a bronze medal at Junior Boys shot with a pb of 41.52m.
Another with a 9.00am start was Oliver Wakefield (Priory) who was 4th in Junior Boys long jump with 5.50m, jumping against much older boys. Glenlola girls Ellen Robinson and Rebekah Rutherford were both 5th in Junior Girls events,Ellen at 75m hurdles with 12.12 sec and Rbekah at high jump with 1.50m. Clare Robinson(Regent House) had 2 pbs, finishing 6th at Senior long jump with 5.08m and at 100m hurdles with 16.62m.
