[Not a valid template]There was some good throwing at Tullamore by Matthew Stockton on Saturday when he easily won the U18 javelin with a big pb of 55.61m – undoubtedly with a 700g implement but still a big pb for the weight. On a blustery first day Oliver Wakefield had a frustrating first day but seems to have found wahat could be a long-lasting rivalry with Daniel Ryan of the wonderfully-named Moycarkey Coolcroo AC in Tipperary. In the early morning U14 long jump, Oliver could only claim the bronze medal with 5.48m (the U15 event was won with 5.45m) when Ryan jumped 5.79m and there was also another athlete with 5.48m. In the 80m final Oliver and Ryan both ran 9.93 sec into a 2.3m/sec headwind with the third way back in 10.20. After half an hour the photo finish finally placed Oliver 2nd.
There were two more bronze medals and a 5th on Day 2 on Sunday at Tullymore, all at under 18. Beth Wilson was 3rd at discus with 35.27m and Andrew Mellon 3rd at 400m in 50.87 sec. Clare Robinson was 5th in the 100m hurdles in 16.68 secs into a 1.5 m/s headwind.
