Open Graded Track and Field League Kicks Off

On Tuesday, athletes from across the province took part in the Athletics NI organised Open Graded Track & Field meet at the newly refurbished Mary Peters Track, Belfast.  The meet was the first round of the Athletics NI Open Graded League, which will include further competitions throughout the summer. The league is standards driven with only athletes  beating the standard to score (down to 8^th). North Down had an easy win overall in the mens’ league with Adam McComb 2^nd at 60m and winner at 150m and 600m for 23 points. City of Lisburn were dominant in the womens’  league though North Down were among the teams at equal 2^nd thanks to a a win at high jump by Alex Catherwood.

On this occasion, the distances on offer for the running events, were: 60m, 150m, 600m and 2000m. Apart from the 60m where the standard appeared too easy and every athlete obtained it, the standards quated to the 1^st three in the track races. By comparison, the field standards always appeared too low.

Peter Glass was 3^rd at 60m and won the shot, Brendan McConville won the high jump and was 2^nd at shot, Tom Reynolds was 3^rd at high jump and shot making it a good night for North Down’s decathlon squad especially as Adam is coached by Brendan. Michael Dyer was just narrowly edged out of 2^nd at 600m while Andrew Mellon was a heat winner at 60m and missed the 150m standard by a mere  0.02 secs.
