Youth Developmant League Round 2

The second round of the Northern Ireland Youth Development League took place at Antrim Stadium on Sat 25th, this time with a welcome injection of sunshine. North Down were in 3rd place after Round 1 and had a better turnout this time and were better represented in the key U13 and U15 age groups. The athletes had some very impressive results but must realise that the team will not progress further without filling the missing gaps in the events.

Molly Longstaff was available in the sprints and was 2nd and 3rd at 100m and 200m and won the long jump with Grace Arnold in support.  Molly Brown  and  Murphy Miller were again impressive in the 1200m and both were inside Molly’s U13 club record from the previous round. . Johnny Moore and Archie Gillies were excellent in the sprints and long jump with Finlay Greer winning the javelin

The U15 sprinters were also to the fore and there was a long succession of club winners in the sprints with Saskia Greer, Olivia Cumming, Isobel Meharg, Oliver Wakefield, Aaron Sexton and Reece Corbett to the fore. The same athletes led the way in the relays and were prominent in the jumps, Oliver adding 30 cm to his win in the Ulster Schools. Michael Gaffney was outstanding in the throws with his javelin win out to 45.32m. At middle distance Nia McNally, Craig McMeechan, Charles McNutt and Ben McCaughan were up there.

There was not much of a turnout from any club in the U17 league but North Down had good performances with Alex Catherwood, Ciaran Farren and Jamie McMeechan all up there.

Lets hope more of the talented athletes we have can turn out in the next round and we can fill some of those missing events.
