All six North Down athletes who ran for Northern Ireland in the Masters International at Stormont on Saturday are entitled to be pleased with themselves. Congratulations to Brian Smith who collected a team bronze medal in his last year at M60, to Debbie Matchett, Fred Murdock and Ken Hawtin who were first Northern Ireland runners at F40, M65 and M70 respectively and to Francis Marsh and Stephanie Hambling who were second and third Northern Ireland runners at M40 and F35.
Apart from the M60 team the most successful Northern Ireland team at a very rainy Stormont was the M35 squad who were second to the Republic. They were led by David Morwood of North Belfast Harriers who won the category while Steven Cairns of Annadale Striders was third M40 after leading most of the way. Karen Marshall of St Annes won the F50 title, her ninth gold medal in this series. Bangor Classic winner Pauline Curley of Tullamore Harriers was second F35.
