North Down Men finish 5th in All Ireland League

The final of the Woodies DIY AAi National League took place on Sunday at Tullamore , won by Crusaders from Leevale and with North Down finishing 5th . Although North Down were were pretty good on the track, they  struggled with the decathletes unavailable and a late injury to Paddy McGrattan. Michael Dyer (having raced at a windy BMC  in Stretford the evening before where he was 2nd in the B 800m in 1:53.83) ran from gun to tape to win the 1500m. Matthew  Stockton  produced a good win in the Javelin. James Budde shaved his personnel best coming 3rd in the 3000m steeple chase. The mens 4 x 400 team achieved a  useful 2nd place (3:23) with the team running order of: Curtis Woods, Mark Patterson, Adam McComb and Michael Dyer. Callum Hunter had a busy day: 2 x jumps, hurdles (2nd) and 4×100. Curtis mucked in to take on the high jump. That left Kenny Elliott to manfully cover shot and discus against Ireland’s finest.

It was a somewhat frustrating day as the team results after the leading two were much compressed and it would not have taken much to get 3rd. It has been a long while since we competed without a decathlete but a specialist thrower or two would have made a big difference.
