[Not a valid template]The Phoenix Gas Northern Ireland and Ulster Indoor Championships were held at the weekend at the Odyssey filling the morning slots. There were more pbs and more medals with Jordan Stokes and Brian Barron getting outright pbs at 1992 800m and Jordan collecting the Ulster Championship. As well as first time runs and obvious pbs at 60m, Matthew Hamilton (1994) and Michael McComb (1995) both had pbs at long jump with Matthew collecting two medals. Kerrie Craig (1993) won a high jump medal, while Timothy Lennon (1995) made an excellent first appearance.
The 1994 800m was settled on Sunday on overall times and Torlach Grant of Navan did our boys (and others) a favour firstly by being ineligible for the Ulster Championship and then by setting a fierce pace which ensured all the fastest times came from his heat. Jordan went with him and managed to hold on ahead of the rest to take the title in 2:11.1 min with Brian 5th (4th Ulster) in 2:12.1. Clare Scott and Leigh McWha also ran at 1992 level, Clare at 800m (2:49.6) and Leigh at 200m (31.7). On the same day Kerrie Craig jumped 1.45m to finish 3rd in the 1993 high jump but 2nd in Ulster for a silver.
There was more time the previous day which allowed for finals. Matthew had a good day winning his 60m heat in 8.1 secs followed up by winning silver in a very tight final with 7.96 secs. Though 4th in the long jump with 5.05m, he was 3rd Ulster and added a bronze to his Ulster Schools Minor title. Michael was 3rd in the 60m heat in 9.1 sec and 7th at long jump with 4.15m. Timothy had a great introduction, winning his 800m heat in 2:40.8 min and taking 6th in the final in 2:35.6 min.
And we must remember to congratulate the Bangor Primary Schools team who waltzed away with the Primary Schools Challenge on Sunday and to thank Gillian and all the North Down AC kids (and parents) who handled the basket carrying for the athletes in the Woodies Senior Championships
