Men Retain Team Trophy

The Mens’Team had far too much power and depth to be affected by British League call-ups, injury, illness or the demands of back-to-back competition at a particularly heavy period of the season. It was the fourth straight win, the first under Richard Lockhart and a record score and winning margin under the current system. City of Derry were 2nd and Mid Ulster 3rd.

Strength in the Field would have been sufficient to retain the Team Trophy but all sections were on song. Club records are tumbling with Michael McConkey pushing the javelin record to 57.97m and Jeremy Harper adding the Senior discus record to his previous days record with U20 implements.

With the Trophy in the bag and unlimited entries permitted (still 2 to score) it became a competition as to who could do most events with Paul Curran repeating his 2003 effort of 8 events. Middle distance was good, sprints were good with a siver in the Championship 4 x 100m and gold in the 4 x 400m.

Stuart Donald bought maximum recovery time for the 4 x 400m teams by spinning out the steeplechase for as long as he could but still did not finish last.
