In the World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, the Irish 4×100m women’s relay team set a new Irish junior record in their heat on Friday afternoon. The team of Joan Healy, Steffi Creaner, Hannah Lewis and Mairead Murphy, who replaced the injured Niamh Whelan, set a time of 45.93 sec. Unfortunately this was not good enough to qualify from their heat as they finished in fourth position. The heat was won by Jamaica in a time of 44.55.
Earlier in the day City of Lisburn runner, Ciara Mageean, got Irish hopes of a medal at the World Junior Championships in Poland back on track when she qualified for the final of the 1,500m. 16 year old Mageean, who still has three years left at Junior level, finished fourth her heat in a personal best time of 4.21:73 but made it through to Sunday’s final as one of the fastest losers. Sara-Louise Treacy couldn’t emulate Mageean and finished 8th in her heat.
