The Distance Medley Relay featured as the relay event on Saturday in the Londonderry Trophy (Queens v UU but guests allowed) at Mary Peters. Very popular in US high school and college meetings the DMR (1200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m} is very rare this side of the Atlantic. The North Down team of Francis Marsh, Kenny Elliott, Brian Barron and Niall Robinson came first in 11:04.50 min. Although pedants will probably point out Queens Men and Queens Ladies were the only other teams running, in the absence of any history the teams feel that North Down AC can claim the Northern Ireland Record and Queens the men and womens" University Records.
The team had all run beforehand, Francis and Brian running 9:06.6 and 9:43.7 min for 3000m, Niall 1:23.08 min for 600m and Kenny 11.19 and 23.40 secs for 100m and 200m. Pete Glass and Tom Reynolds warmed up for this weekend"s Woodford Green decathlon with Pete throwing 38.42m for discus and Tom34.17m as well as doing 100m, 200m and long jump. In the Londonderry Trophy Chris Summers threw 35.78 and 21.75m at hammer and discus for University of Ulster while Gemma McAnirn and Nicola Simpson were very active members of the Queens team. Both girls did the DMR after Gemma threw 28.76 and 20.94m in discus and hammer and Nicola ran 1:46.6 min for 600m and threw discus and hammer.
