Ormeau Park on Saturday was the venue for the annual Podium 4 Sport Seeley Cup 10k. Despite no longer being the ANI 10K Championship event, the Willowfield promotion easily reached its capped maximum of 1000 runners in pre-entries. Favourites Paul Pollck (Annadale) and Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle) won the individual prizes with time to spare and North Belfast took the Seeley Cup. In this 6 to score event, North Down men were 3rd place team after NBH and Annadale with scorers Michael Dyer, Stephen Wylie, Dennis Scott, Francis Marsh, Craig McMeechan and James Budde. Valerie McDonough was first North Down lady.
Young Craig of course is the name that jumps out in that list with 33rd place in a Championship strength field in an impressive 34:33 min and a very bright future beckons. His brother Jamie McMeechan also had a good run while at the opposite end of the age spectrum, evergreen Terry Eakin ran 39:07 taking 1st M65 (and M60 for that matter). Terry’s feat was mirrored in the ladies race where North Down’s 2nd finisher Lynne Kerr ran 43:28 to win the F50 category. Altogether 17 men and 7 ladies finished for North Down.
Make that 18 men. It took a day or so to pick up that Nick Irvine (39:33) had been put down as Norh Belfast instead of North Down.
