Ards 5 Mile Challenge

[Not a valid template]On Friday evening in separate races, Simon Seaton and Debbie Matchett went to the top of the 5 mile road race ranking list. Simon was in Cookstown and was 7th in 26:39 min at the Sperrin race while Debbie and a host of clubmates were in Newtonards at another very successful edition of the annual charity race. Debbie in 34:24 min and Sarah Benton in 36:28 were 2nd and 3rd in the womens open race, a race won in record time by Shireen Crumpton, who spearheads the New Zealand marathon team at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin this month but was in Northern Ireland for a family wedding. Martin Rea won the mens race with Brian Barron in 29:22 min the first North Down runner in 5th with Andrew Muir 13th and Simon Cummings 15th. In the vets race (45+ for this race), Gerry Coy and Terry Eakin were 2nd and 4th and Conor O’Boyle was 3rdin the 16 and under race.

An interesting competitor was Canadian resident Don Emerson who was in Bangor on vacation. Then a long jumper, Don competed in Ward Park in the sixties for Bangor AC, the club run by Richard Weglarz which moved to Uprichard Park and subsequently meged with North Down AC. In a strange way, Don is our longest seving active member.
