The Northern Ireland and Ulster U14-U17 Championships took place over the weekend at Antrim Stadium with U14 and U15 on Saturday and U16 and U17 on Sunday, apart from middle distance wher all 800m races were on Saturday and 1500m ones on Sunday.. The entries from North Down juniors have been numerically very poor in recent years but they were a lot healthier this time round mainly thanks to an influx in the past few weeks of new members with no hang-ups over competing.
Oliver Wakefield and Mark Burton led the medal count on Saturday, Oliver winning U14 sprints 80m this time) and long jump and Mark winning U15 triple jump and taking silver in high jump. Unfortunately the blustery conditions rendered a lot of the performance invalid for record purposes. Olivia Cumming just missed a long jump medal but our athletes qualified for a lot of finals.
On Sunday, the wind was quieter and the older age groups were on. Alex Catherwood kept up her run of titles and won the U17 high jump with 1.60m. Jonny Baxter was 2nd and 3rd at U17 triple and long jumps respectively and there were bronze medals for Chris Ball at U16 shot, Sophie Cree at U16 javelin and Emma Stockton at U17 javelin. Again most athletes reached finals, with some busy people a lot of finals. Congratulations to all who went to the Championships, especially the newer members who will have benefitted from the experience.
