Rachel Gibson, Kathy Hetherington and Alan Kennedy (all University of Ulster) were among the small number of Northern athletes attending the Irish Universities Track and Field Championships in Waterford on Friday and Saturday. All had reason to be pleased with their opening track season performances. Alan was 2nd in triple jump and Kathy 3rd in discus, both with a best distance for 2 years and Rachel was 4th in a strong 3000m, beating her pb from last season by more than 11 secs.
In a compelling mens triple jump, Alan had 14.54m on his 4th jump to tie with Eoin Kelly of UCC. With 14.40 as his 2nd best jump, Alan passed his 5th round jump but did not improve on his last jump. Kelly then produced a 2nd best jump of 14.46m to break the deadlock on a tie break.
Kathy threw 41.68m in the 2nd round which was enough for 3rd. Rachel ran a big pb of 10:08.40 min in a rare outing at 3000m and was 4th.
