20 miles is always a popular distance for a marathon training run, and Andrea Green joined in Atlas Running’s latest race on Sunday 16th July when runners lined up at Newry to run back along the canal to Portadown . The canal originally opened in 1742 to transport coal from Coalisland in County Tyrone to Dublin via Lough Neagh, Portadown, Newry and the Irish Sea before the arrival of the railways. Sunday’s run section brought runners along the towpath through Poyntzpass, Scarva and past the worryingly named popular fishing spot, Lough Shark! Andrea and her fellow competitors were treated to all seasons of the Northern Irish summer en route to Portadown and she finished in 3:48:15.
