The inaugural Decathlon 10K took place on Sunday along the Holywood shore, obviously sponsored by the store of the same name. To the relief of the North Down AC decathletes, they were not expected to participitate but leave it to the endurance squad. It was a good race for Rachel Gibson who marked her road race debut in North Down colours by finishing 2nd lady and 1st in the Open Women category in 44:21 in tough conditions. Darren McKee was 1st club runner home, 14th in 38:33, with Douglas Grant 19th in 39:10 and Gerry Coy, 25th and 1st M50 in 39:57. Others included Andrew Muir, 55th in 44:51; Alison Downey, 79th in 49:04 and 2nd F35; and Pat O’Driscoll, 127th in 53:34 as well as 2nd M60.
We should definitely thank Roberta Dornan who sacrificed an entry and a probable win in the womens race for a long hard day at the coal face in Sligo in fierce weather as a member of the 5 girl team in the club team in the National League Premium Division opening round.
