Edwards Meet 1 – Oliver, Niall & Co show class

The Edwards & Co Super 5 Series, promoted by Lagan Valley AC opened with a bang on Thursday evening at Mary Peters. With events for all from Primary School to senior athletes, this opening meeting always attracts big numbers but the record turnout this year was massive, testing the car parking to destruction as well as the ambulance, first aid and emergency cover. It was well after 10.00 pm and very dark when the final event, the senior 1500m took place.

North Down had a dozen or so athletes there with their presence very noticeable. The new kid on the block Oliver Wakefield continued his explosive start to the season with a hat trick of outright wins – 100m in 13.70, high jump with 1.40m and shot with 8.01m. At U15 level James Doherty, running as Nendrum College won 100m outright in 12.61, matched by Elleana Hamilford-Hull in the girls 100m with 13.45. She was also well up in long jump and discus as was Natasha Mellon in the same 3 events. With many heats involved, club athletes were heat winners or runners-up, if not outright medallists.

At senior level, Stuart Brown, Jake McAdam and Natalie Steele similarly did well in the sprints. The meet finally ended with the long-delayed Mens 1500m. Niall Robinson was the big winner here, going round in the dark in 4:00.9 min. In the same race Glen Willis ran 4:14.3 (by-passing the U17 race) and the evergreen Terry Eakin ran 5:04.9
