European Decathlon – 2nd day

Brendan McConville held his nerve and body together to register a new decathlon pb of 7324 points and become the 5th Northern Ireland athlete to reach the Commonwealth Games Nomination Standard in the required time frame. Brendan ran 15.08 secs for the hurdles and had a pb in discus of 37.37m. A4.60m pole vault was then followed bo seasons bests in javelin and 1500m of 47.52m and 4:26.75.

Brendan was 12th overall and first in the GB team. The team gained a place overnight over the Swiss but was unable to prevent relegation from the First League.

Brendan was 100 points down on his strong high jump and while the points were made up elsewhere this time, the priority is rest, physio and technical training to get the high jump back up to speed.
