Four Generations of McConvilles: Yandall Triplets Compete (updated)

Troy and Brendan McConville

In the 4th and final round of the Northern Ireland section of the UK Youth Development League at Mary Peters Track on Saturday, North Down AC athletes produced a strong performance and did more than enough to take overall 2nd place in the competition. Two items are well worthy of note, one being the debut of 11year old Troy McConville who won the U13 high jump and became the 4th generation of the Mallon-McConville dynasty to compete for the club. The other was Saturday was the first occasion that all three of the Yandall identical triplets Lucas , Ethan and Oscar competed.

Troy’s great grandfather is pioneer fell runner Terry Mallon, Grandmother Roma McConville won the Belfast Marathon in 1983 and father Brendan McConville did the decathlon in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games and competes next week in that event at the World Police and Fire Games. We think Oscar and Ethan won the A and B javelins though one may have been Lucas and for all we know, one of them could have done 9 events.

City of Lisburn AC will represent Northern Ireland in the National Finals of the UKA Youth Development League to be held in Birmingham in early September 2013, having built up an unassailable lead previously and we congratulate them but the new format this year has seemed dull. Lisburn did not have things all their own way though and North Down gave it a good go. Saskia Greer won the U15 girls 100m and 200m with younger brother Finlay taking the U13 throws. Oliver Wakefield was narrowly beaten at 100m and starred in both winning U15 relays. That was despite a totally unfair short turnover between 4 x 100m and 4 x 300m relays when track officials inexplicably amalgamated intervening relays despite excellent weather and the meeting running on time.

There was a larger than usual turn out for the Senior open events and Adam McComb  dominated a strong men’s 400m field to break 49 seconds and returned later to be equally impressive in the 200m.
