Frustration for Tom

Tom Reynold‘s high hopes of achieving the Commonwealth Games selection guideline dropped over the weekend when the prestigious Hexham International Decathlon ended in farce. Always a high quality event but at a notoriously windy venue, the winds this time reached gale force. After a good 100m in 11.22 sec (+1.7), Tom was in good long jump form with his opening jump marginally over the line going out to 7.35m but his best legal jump was 6.84m (+2.7). With 12.88m for shot, 1.84m for high jump and a 50.89 sec windy 400m, Tom ended the first day in 4th. The second day was doomed as Tom ran 14.68 sec (+5.8) for 110m hurdles and threw 35.45m at discus. With the pole vault at 4.00m and a fierce crosswind, he was still 4th but the vault was abandoned on safety grounds and the decathlon effectively scrapped. With the deadline only two weeks away and no decathlons scheduled, Tom can only wait and hope.
