Hannah wins at “Schools Olympics”

Hannah Lewis was one of a trio of Northern Ireland girl medallists at the first day of athletics at the inaugural UK School Games in Glasgow – the "Schools Olympics". As part of the build-up to 2012 champions of the Celtic Nations and the English regions compete in one event only in a multi-sport environment. Hannah was the long jump favourite going in with her best of 5.78m ahead of the field and she duly won with 5.69m (+0.78m). Her series was 4.99 (-0.9), 5.46 (+2.0), 5.69 (+0.8), 5.53 (+0.8), 5.15 (+0.9), x, taking the lead on the third round.  Linzi Herron (Lisbon) won high jump with 1.67m and Jenny Brown (Mid Ulster) was 2nd at shot with 11.83m. In addition Tasha Paxton won the 100m invitational race.

Grant Montgomery was 5th in his heat of the 400m hurdles in a pb of 60.85 secs, Kathryn Colwell ran close to her best in the 300m with 42.12 secs finishing 5th in her heat. Kiki Malomo Paris at 100m was 5th in her heat in 12.85 secs. Katie Hewitt at 300m hurdles was 6th in her heat in 48.32 secs. Tasha Paxton, one of the relay squad, was first in the 100m invitational race in 12.78 secs (-1.5m).

The athletics concluded on Sunday with all finals and the remaining field events. In the 100m Final Kiki was 8th in another time of 12.85 secs. There was another win for Northern Ireland, again in a field event, when Gary Coulter of Ballymena won the youths high jump in 2.03m.
