The climax of the school’s athletic season for most is the annual Irish Schools track and field finale at Tullamore. For any athlete to arrive in Tullamore they have achieved success by firstly conquering the competition at the local district schools and then finishing well enough up in the Ulster Schools to make the trip south.
Having won the Ulster Schools 1500M steeplechase in 5:35 Lucy Cheatley was in good shape to take on the Irish equivalent. Tactics play a large part in these races and Lucy felt the effect of this as she finished in 8th timed at 5:50. All experience and I’m sure Lucy will learn from this.
Ben Acheson, also an Ulster schools winner, managed to run 13 seconds quicker over the trip 4:56, which placed him 6th. The strength of the opposition is powerful.
Morgan Wilson, still learning the trade of the arduous pole vault, cleared 15cm’s more than her Ulster Schools success to claim 5th spot, 2:20M. Andrew Brown is a similar new comer to this event and also improved his best to 2:20M which accounted for 7th place.
Niamh Fenlon recorded 9:92M in the inter girls shot put (3kg) to finish in 8th.
Having lost out narrowly for a win in the Ulster Schools Seb Holley is in good shape but not being able to keep up with his pb at the Ulsters he finished 6th clocking a decent 2:10.
Anna Cousins was in the Strathearn Inter 4 x 100m team who finished 7th, 53:30 and Rose McGreevy in the Glenlola Senior 4 x 100m team finishing 6th, 53:40.
Well done to all of our young athletes competing at this level. Great experience and on occasions tactical lessons to be learnt.
