The GloHealth Irish Schools Combined Events Championships took place in the AIT International Arena, Athlone on Saturday. The performances across the board were of a very high standard with the four North Down athletes all doing well. Aaron Sexton, who is better known for his sprinting, took 3 seconds off his 800m PB to move up from 5th to 3rd in the Junior Pentathlon with 2818 pts. This was in addition to pb’s in the hurdles and long jump, all North Down U15 indoor records. After a long absence through injury, Sarah Connolly was nudged out of 3rd in the senior event in the 800m but had 3137 pts and was close to her indoor best at hurdles and high jump as well as a 4Kg shot pb. Holly Brannigan was 9th in the junior girls event with club U15 indoor records at hurdles, long jump and 800m for 2597 pts. In the same junior girls event Lauren Hamilton was 12th with 2211 pts.
Holly’s scores were 60mH 9.64 sec (861 pts); 3Kg Shot 7.88m (392); LJ 4.63m (461); HJ 1.27m (379); 800m (2:39.07 min) for a total of 2597 pts. Lauren had 10.21, 5.90, 3.86, 1.33 and 2:48.76. Sarah had 60mH 9.21 (867); 4Kg shot 8.93 (460); LJ 5.01 (562); 1.63 (771); 800m 2:48.76 (477) for 3137 pts. The boys did 200m instead of high jump and Aaron’s scores were 60mH 8.93 (761); 4Kg shot 9.10 (432); LJ 5.22 (425); 200m 23.60 (707); 800m 2:17.11 (493). Teams representing Irish Schools will be selected for the UK Indoor Schools Championships to be held in Glasgow in December at the Emirates Arena.
