Many local athletes eagerly anticipate one of the earliest fixtures in the annual 10k road racing season, the Jimmy’s 10k, organised annually by East Down AC since 1999. The race began as a small race remembering one of the clubs founder members, Jimmy Murray, and has grown into a permanent and popular fixture in the local athletics calendar. This year’s event was held in Downpatrick on a cold, wet and windy Sunday 10th March when 517 athletes and a further 23 pairs of relay runners, lined up in Market Street to race out of the town towards the war memorial and complete 2 loops around the Quoile Road before finishing back in Downpatrick. 8 North Down AC runners took part. First to finish was Maol Larkin in 20th place overall in 37:12. Chris Belshaw was the next NDAC finisher in 39:54 taking family honours ahead of Andy Belshaw in 40:57. Sarah Gibson 43:16 was 2nd F50 and Les Wilkinson 43:45 was 3rd M65. Luke Hamilton ran an excellent 44:17 and Paula Simpson 50:15 was 2nd F55 with Sophie Hamilton 1:00:36 rounding off strong North Down performances in tough conditions.
