North Down AC’s John Adgey is no stranger to racing in the Mournes, and over the weekend of Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th September he took on the Mourne Mountain Marathon. Unlike most races where marshals and signs seamlessly direct runners from start to finish, pairs of competitors in this challenging event are given a route card with grid references each day and they have to plot their own course to visit each of these in order. They also have to carry all their kit for an overnight camp as well. Despite mist on the peaks on Saturday and cloud cover down to ground level on Sunday, seriously compromising visibility, John and Chris Adgey completed the 35km distance with over 1800 m of ascent in 14:20;34 in 6th place in the C Class Veterans’ race.
