The London Stadium in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park was filled to its 50,000 capacity on Sunday 23rd July for the latest meeting in the international Athletic Diamond League, the biggest athletics event in the 2012 Olympic Games stadium since 2019 and a final test for some elite athletes ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest next month. Spectators witnessed Zharnel Hughes smash a 30 year old British men’s 200m record in 19.73 and Ethiopian world champion Gudaf Tsegay win the women’s 5000m in 14:12.29 which, for perspective, was more than 3 minutes faster than the speediest runner at Bangor parkrun this week! Early arrivals to the stadium might also have enjoyed another highlight as North Down AC’s Lynne Kerr ran her fastest 5k in 5 years. Lynne’s 5k race started in the stadium and went through the Olympic Park before returning to finish inside the Olympic Stadium. Lynne finished in 25:10.
