Mark Patterson qualified for the 800m final on Saturday at the Irish Nationals, running 1:53.67 min and finishing 2nd in his heat to Thomas Chamney. That meant a return to Santry on Sunday for the final. David Campbell took the lead at the 20m mark with Thomas Chamney on his shoulder. That order remained and with 200m remaining the whole field was bunched with just metres separating first from last. Chamney made his move with 150m to go and in spite of the best efforts of Campbell he held his lead all the way to the line to retain his title in 1:49.87. When the dust settled Mark was 7th in 1:53.83 min.
