The 2012 Irish Universities Track and Field Championships took place in Athlone on Saturday with Alan Kennedy and Kathy Hetherington winning medals for University of Ulster and Rachel Gibson just missing out for Queens University but the two girls could both celebrate pb’s. Alan successfully defended his triple jump title, winning with a useful 14.54m, a centimeter less than when he won the eqivalent indoor title at Nenagh in February. Womens track captain Kathy was 2nd in the discus, adding nearly two metres to her pb with 39.45m with a 40 plus throw clearly in prospect. With 4th place in the 3000m, Rachel was disappointed to miss out on a medal but with 10:34.70 min she was 10 secs inside her pb and looks in good track form.
