NI Road Relay Champs

[Not a valid template][Not a valid template]North Down AC had a successful afternoon in the NI Road Relay Champs at Victoria Park yesterday, taking gold in the womens masters, silver in the senior womens and bronze in both the senior men and master womens. All athletes ran a 2-lap course over 3.38k. Roberta Dornan took the Masters Women’s team into an early lead ahead of Dromore and this was held to the finish by Ali Robinson on leg 2 and womens captain Ange Perrott on anchor.  Grabbing a well deserved bronze were the ‘B’ team of: Jill Aicken, Sarah Benton & Valarie McDonough

In the Senior womens race, Jessica Craig ran a well-paced race to the clock, the fastest overall fastest split from North Down (12:20) to finish leg 1 in 2nd and ahead of the NDAC masters team. ‘Rookie’ Kerry Speers showed her raw talent by eating up a lot of ground on the leading Lisburn team before Stephanie Hambling ran a solid anchor leg to safely secure the silver for the team.

Michael Dyer tore off with the leaders at the start on leg 1 then lost a little ground on the 2nd lap, but still managed to stay in 3rd – just ahead of WTH – before handing over to Niall Robinson (returning from injury) who kept the team in 3rd.  Positions remained the same on leg 3 by Francis Marsh, while Glen Willis closed slightly on 2nd place place Lagan Valley but had to settle for team bronze.

Mark Weir showed a cool head for the NDAC masters when ‘taking out’ the NDAC mens ‘C’ team over the latter half of leg 1 before handing over to Gerry Coy followed by Terry Eakin who moved the team into 3rd, but David Balmer was up against some much more seasoned runners on his tail and the team had to settle for 6th.

With 28 from NDAC competing, not everyone can be covered in the report but all NDAC individuals and splits are detailed below (note: results typo has been corrected, M Dyer lap 1: 4:57.9 & not 4:51.9).

Thanks to all those who took part or went down just for support!……and big thanks to Orangegrove AC for organising.
