Three of North Down AC’s top ladies made the long trip to Cork over the weekend for the Irish Universities (and College) Athletic Association Track & Field Championships. The meeting took pace at the Mardyke Arena over Friday and Saturday, Kathy Hetherington (UU) finished in the silver medal position in the discus after a good series with a38.69m best. Kathy was 2nd after the cut-off with a 2nd round throw of 38.54m which she improved in the 6th round to 38.69m. In the packed 1500m final, which had fifteen starters, Jessica Craig (UU) claimed 5th place in 4:55.73 min. QUB student, Rachel Gibson narrowly missed out on a bronze medal after finishing in 4th place in the 3,000m final winner with a pb of 10:23.67 min..
Rachel smashed her 3000m pb by 11 seconds and her time of 10:23.67 was also a intervarsity record for a QUB athlete. Jessica made a late decision to race the 1500m – after suffering a virus the previous week – to finish a creditable and gain useful points with her 4.55.73.
Stateside, Lauren Scott continues to make progress towards her best form with a close 2nd over 1500m in 4:36.75 at the Lee Calhourn Memorial meet held in Western Illinois.
