North Down win the Malcolm Cup

Ballyclare is proving a very fruitful hunting ground for North Down AC at the moment and good packing led to a first time victory in the Malcolm Cup. On a cold but dry day North Down won the 4 mile feature race at the Annadale Striders promotion with Francis Marsh 8th in 22:54 min, Simon Seaton 12th in 23:35 min, James Budde 13th in 23:41 min and John Carlisle 14th in 23:42 min. Able back-up came from Niall Robinson, 17th in 23:50 min, Mark Patterson, 19th in 24:02 min, Thomas Simpson, 31st in 25:48 min and Jonathan McGarvey, 37th in in 28:46 min. The individual winner was Brian Campbell (Willowfield) from David Moorwood (North Belfast) and Greg Roberts (Derry). Our scoring 4 actually totalled 47 (not 50 as posted) with City of Derry (on 65) 2nd team on countback from North Belfast Harriers.The team packed well from the start with Francis, James and John together around 6th position after one lap with Niall close behind. Simon started slowly but moved into the scoring four in the third lap and moved up to second scorer in the last lap. Four of the eight North Down runners were under 20.

There were also a couple of veteran prizes in the Horwell Cup from Fred Murdoch and Ken Hawtin in the 3 mile vets race which was combined with the ladies race. North Down results were Tony Wall 26th (3rd M50) 19:08 min, Stephanie Hambling 43rd 20:25 min, Fred Murdoch 54th (1st M65) 21:27 min, Hilary Kernaghan 59th 21:48 min, Ken Hawtin (1st M70) 22:57 min, John Monaghan 69th (3rd M60) 23:18 min. Jordan Stokes was 7th in the 2 mile under 17 race in 18:49 min.
